The Music

Views of Chicago | The Music

The multi-composition Views of Chicago will be written by Patrick Zimmerli, a noted composer of contemporary classical and Jazz music. Views of Chicago is intended to honor the memory of Fredda Hyman, the founder of “Music in the Loft,” a Chicago chamber music series on which Zimmerli once served as resident composer.  The series fostered some of the finest young composers and performers in the world, and Hyman was an early champion of Zimmerli’s music.

In Views of Chicago Zimmerli will write a work for each group to premiere independently, culminating in a final concert that brings all the artists together, showcasing the spectrum of creative excellence of Chicago’s diverse musical communities, amplified by their proximity to one another. Zimmerli’s diversity and depth of experience in chamber music, choral music, jazz, and new music makes him uniquely qualified to write for Chicago-based groups across all of these genres.

Each piece along with the grand finale will be recorded for a commercial CD.

This project will bring together the best of Chicago’s musical culture in all its dimensions: Jazz musicians, new music specialists, and classical and choral artists will all mix and blend in a way that will build bridges across diverse communities and give a full picture of the intellectual and soulful breadth and depth of the city.
